About Walter Randel:
“I have had the privilege of dealing in works of art now for over 50 years. Along with works of contemporary artists, I deal with works of art that span more than 2000 years and many cultures.” – Walter Randel
Walter Randel is an art dealer, based in New York for whom the pursuit of understanding quality and the development of connoisseurship have been the primary focus in his work of art dealing in many fields of expertise. Having studied art history with Meyer Schapiro, Walter Randel has been deeply involved with the problems and issues concerning modern art. He received his M.F.A. from Columbia University in 1955.
Walter Randel works closely with private clients and many renowned institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Detroit Institute of Art and the Kimbell Museum.
After a visit to the Field Museum in Chicago in 1969, Randel became interested in South Seas art and spent the next four years in New Guinea. It is from this first-hand examination of the art and culture of New Guinea that he was able to plant the seeds of interest and provide a channel of acquisition for collectors of discernment. Such was the case with the early collections of primitive art that Randel helped to form for Nelson Rockefeller and Alice Bache.
Having traveled and studied in Europe, India, the South Seas, Mexico, Central and South America, Mr. Randel’s in-depth studies of the past, its art, literature and music have placed him squarely in the present. His relatively new presence in Chelsea now gives him the opportunity to show both works of art from the past as well as introducing and exhibiting the works of contemporary artists.
