The Chelsea Art Museum, Home of the Miotte Foundation, showcases modern and contemporary art through thematic exhibitions that examine current global issues. A central aspect of the Chelsea Art Museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit, and further research abstract art, in particular the work of Jean Miotte, which comprises a large portion of the museum’s permanent collection. Committed to exploring art within a societal context, the museum compliments exhibitions with a comprehensive public program consisting of artist talks, round-table discussions, tours, film screenings, lectures, concerts, and dance performances.

Since opening in 2002, Chelsea Art Museum, home of the Miotte Foundation, has presented over 50 thematic exhibitions showcasing local and international contemporary artists. Located in a historic, mid-19th century warehouse at 556 W 22nd Street, CAM is aptly situated across from the Chelsea Piers in the heart of New York’s gallery district. The Piers once served as the point of arrival and assimilation of foreign cultures to New York and today the museum symbolically carries on that tradition.

Chelsea Art Museum is the Home of the Miotte Foundation, founded to archive and conserve the oeuvre of Jean Miotte, comprising a significant portion of CAM’s permanent collection. The Miotte Foundation also supports research on l’Informel, furthering a historical investigation of the transnational movement of art autre (art of another kind). A venue for innovative exhibitions, the Miotte Foundation testifies to Abstraction’s continued relevance and power in postmodern vocabulary.

Ever expanding, CAM’s permanent collection boasts over 500 works consisting of paintings, etchings, sculptures, ceramics, and tapestries, as well as an important selection of rare books and works on paper. Highlighting decades of research on abstract art, the collection features paintings and sculptures by Informel and Abstract Expressionist artists from Europe and the United States, including a substantial body of work by Jean Miotte, Joan Mitchell, Manuel Millares, Jean-Paul Riopelle, and many others. Affichistes (poster artists), such as the Italian artist Mimo Rotella, comprise another portion of the permanent collection.
