Susan Schomburg opened the Schomburg Gallery at Bergamot Station Arts Center in 2001 after almost a decade of working on Melrose Avenue, as a research director for William A. Karges Fine Art, the veteran L.A. dealer of California Impressionism and later as the Director of Edenhurst Gallery, where she specialized in early California Impressionist paintings.
Ms. Schomburg comes from an art family. Her grandfather was the legendary illustrator Alex Schomburg whose work graced the covers of Marvel Comics Captain America as well as books by Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Alex was the first artist hired by Stanley Kubrick to work on 2001: A Space Odyssey.
In her first year of business, Schomburg came out of the starting blocks quickly. Schomburg’s April 2002 show of Domenic Cretara’s paintings of the OJ Simpson murder trial attracted television news coverage for the opening—a rare occurrence for an art opening.
