A brand new address in the revived Wynwood Arts District in downtown Miami, The Black Square Gallery brings a unique program of Eastern European contemporary masters and emerging artists from the West. Directors Anna Milashevych (from Ukraine) and Ronald Kritzler (from Venezuela) represent a trove of artists with diverse histories and techniques. Notable artists include two ‘first-generation’ Ukrainians Oleg Tistol and Victor Sydorenko (both appearing at the 49th and 52nd editions of the Venice Biennale, respectively), Swiss duo Admir Jahic & Comenius Roethlisberger (who have ignited the scene at SCOPE with flying saucers and YouTube drawings) and Japanese installation specialist Taro Hattori (who has taught at UC Berkeley and is a frequent fixture at experimental non-profits The LAB and Mission 17 in San Francisco).
Name: Black Square Gallery (named after Malevich’s 1915 ‘Black Square’, a seminal work in contemporary conceptualism and the signature of Suprematism)
“Black Square Gallery opened its doors to present world art processes and trends to modern viewers. We are pleased to show our visitors and collectors a group of selected and accomplished artists, former participants of the Venice Biennale, São Paulo Art Bienal and other significant art events. We are the only gallery in Miami which represents young, but well-known contemporary artists from Eastern Europe.”
- Anna Milashevych, Director
