Ursula von Rydingsvard
Ursula von Rydingsvard has a longstanding devotion and respect for cedar beams – trucks bring load after load from British Columbia to her Bushwick studio. Her highly unorthodox cuts produce an organic and expressive range of forms with straight electric saw blades.
At Columbia in the ‘70s, she absorbed the dominant style of minimalist sculpture while finding her own idiom. “Following the fashion has never been my way,” she says. Von Rydingsvard’s work is now in the collections at the Met, the MoMA, and the Whitney, and she continues to take risks, contrasting her beloved cedar with materials like polyurethane resin and intestine.
