This weekend thousands of New Yorkers made the trek to Randall’s Island for the first New York art fair from London’s Frieze, held in a striking $1.5 million tent designed by local architecture firm SO-IL. In addition to over 180 international galleries, the fair also included artist commissions (sponsored by Mulberry) and a full schedule of talks and panels.
SEVEN Heats Up the Boiler

Some works are site-specific, such as Emil Lukas’ Skin, which modifies the industrial space, or Ben Gocker’s chaotic arrangement of objects, which is best described as a “visual poem.” There is a common thread of collage and combinations of disparate imagery through all of the works. Hew Locke, a Briton of Guyanese descent, created his own coat of arms from exotic imagery, mimicking the cultural adaptation of colonized peoples and the fungibility of culture and identity.
Frieze Projects: Not Just Business as Usual

Since its inception in 2003, Frieze Art Fair has set itself apart as the premier fair for contemporary art through its carefully selected roster of galleries and its Frieze Projects commissions. Often critical or contrary to the commercial art fair model, the choice of projects reflects the Frieze Foundation’s desire to go beyond business as usual.

Although Frieze is taking place in New York for the first time this year, it is already making quite a splash. In addition to the main event, Frieze is surrounded by dozens of events, satellite fairs, and parties.

There's no shortage of art fairs in the springtime, but only one in New York City caters to works exclusively in the $100 to $10,000 range. We asked art advisors Anne Huntington and Susi Kenna to provide some collecting tips as well as their favorite pieces from the upcoming Affordable Art Fair in New York City.

This May, a string of new art fairs are giving New York’s Armory Week a run for its money. The popular Frieze and NADA will hold fairs in New York for the first time, and Pulse has switched from its usual Armory Week time slot in March to coincide with the new fairs. In addition to New York, there are some fantastic fairs around the world throughout the spring, such as ART HK, Art Brussels, and Zona Maco in Mexico City. Check out the list below for a full run-down of this season’s best fairs.

Touring Fountain on International Women’s Day
03/10 |
Robin Grearson
Christina Ray gave us a preview of Kesting/Ray’s booth at the Fountain Art Fair Thursday, which was also International Women’s Day. Perhaps Women’s Day is the reason we noted that a significant proportion of the artwork in the Soho gallery’s booth was created by female artists.
Gilf!: Take Off Your Blinders
03/10 |
Robin Grearson
Artlog stopped by Fountain Thursday as artists and galleries were preparing their booths. We spoke with Gilf!, a street artist whose social and political criticism has found a welcome audience in Fountain visitors. Gilf! first shared a booth with artist Danni Rash last year in New York, then rented her own booths at Fountain Los Angeles and Fountain Miami.
Mighty Tanaka: Conversation with a Young Curator
03/10 |
Robin Grearson
What began in 2006 as three Brooklyn galleries pooling resources to show their artists outside of established fairs has been slowly building not just a fair but a community. We talked with Alex Emmart, curator and co-founder of Mighty Tanaka, a three-years-young Dumbo gallery that first exhibited at Fountain last year. In addition to its booth, Mighty Tanaka is also hosting a collaboration between UFO and Doyle that everyone on site was talking about: a kinetic squid that will be squirting ink (and “making a big mess,” according to the artist).
The Return of Duchamp's Fountain

The most famous urinal in history, Duchamp’s Fountain, is making its impact felt where it all began, in NYC, from Sherrie Levine’s recent Whitney Museum exhibition to the latest installment of The Fountain Art Fair. The fair is taking a leap this year by adding a third armory to the Armory Week mix. While The Armory Show at Piers 92 and 94 and the ADAA’s Art Show at the Park Avenue Armory are in full swing, Fountain, located at the 69th Regiment Armory on 25th and Lexington, opens on Friday, March 9.
