Museum Nerd Roundup: Art "Babel" Growing and Growing
10/30 |

I’ve long been a fan of ArtBabble.org for their great aggregated art video content. I congratulate them on picking up the Tang Museum (Skidmore College’s museum in Saratoga Springs, NY) and Museo del Prado (Madrid’s home of Las Meninas). As their range of contributing museums grows internationally, their aspirations parallel (not really) those of the builders of the Biblical Tower of Babel. Contrary to popular belief, the word “babble” is not traceable to the biblical Babel, whose destruction supposedly resulted in the creation of the planet’s many languages.

One of the most interesting things to happen in the museum world on Twitter was buzz around a hashtag initiated by the NYC Museum Educators Roundtable. On Halloween, the organization tweeted from @NYCMER that they would be retweeting museum educator “horror stories” with the hashtag #MuseumHorrors. You don’t have to be on twitter to click the link and see what people wrote. Some of the responses were truly horrific.

I started using Foursquare because people seeing my tweets about art and museums were saying, “I want to see that, where is it?” A Foursquare check-in with a note attached creates a tweet that solves this problem, because Foursquare automatically attaches a link telling people where you are. When you click the link, you see the name of the place, its address, and other people’s comments and recommendations about the place.
The Walker’s Game-Changing New Website

The Walker Art Center’s new website, www.walkerart.org, launched December 1, represents the most forward-thinking best practices in the museum field today. If you have even the slightest interest in contemporary art and culture, you’ll want to bookmark the website regardless of whether you live in Minneapolis, Minnetonka, or Mumbai. Before I jump into the specifics of the site, let’s take a look at how a medium-sized museum in the middle of a great, but relatively remote, city has leapt (in my estimation) to the forefront of the entire museum field.
