TRIUMPH of the XX
Our origins, our identity, and the ramifications of genetic discoveries are the themes that drive the imagery of Chris Twomey’s work.
Triumph of the XX evokes the passion of the XX chromosome (female) in its ability to heal a flaw or mutation in the DNA by recombining and backing up since there are two X’s. A red haired woman is the metaphor for this concept, as she recombines the genes of the world with various men of different ethnic backgrounds, healing division. Aluminum foil, a simple substrate found in the kitchen and commonly used by women for domestic labor, is elevated, along with this concept, to an articulation of the divine.
BIO:
Award winning artist, as well as writer, and curator, Chris Twomey has had solo exhibitions in NYC and innumerable group exhibitions worldwide. Her next notable solo shows are scheduled for February 2012, “TRIUMPH of the XX” at the AC Institute in NYC, and a new series entitled ‘STOLEN GOODS” premiering at HP Garcia Gallery in NYC, June 2012. Graduating from Pratt Institute with an MFA, Twomey has received various awards; CAPS grant, Ford Grant, Experimental TV award, an American Film Institute Directing Internship, among others. She is also co-founder & curator for Broadthinking.org.
In early 2012, Twomey published CHRIS TWOMEY PARALLAX: Time, Media, and Significance, a personal memoir running parallel to the survey of Twomey’s career over the last 30 years with approximately 130 pages of art images and critical essays by Eleanor Heartney, text by David Freund, Steve Cannon, Norm Hinsey and Chris Twomey.
