Simon Preston is pleased to present Caragh Thuring’s second solo exhibition at the gallery in New York, which opens to the public on Monday, 7th November and will run until 23rd December, 2011.
With this new body of work, Thuring continues to walk a line between the abstract and the representational. In some of the paintings, gravity and chance, in the form of drips and seemingly accidental, painterly gesture, contribute to the overall imagery and composition. The exhibition will comprise of a group of works on both unprimed and machine dyed linen, each of which appear, at once, slightly disruptive, while oddly coherent. The show includes both a diptych and quadtych, extending various ideas and interests, beyond what it is contained within any single canvas.
Thuring remains concerned with a certain fragmentary quality, reflected in the choice of works shown here together, along with her construction of empty frames which sit awkwardly over gestural underpainting. The complexity of these images hinge on the oscillation of scale between the smaller individual frames and the abrupt cropping of works, together with the compositional juggling of the exhibition as a whole. At no one moment can all the imagery be perceived, masking any particular narrative and leaving each of the works with a peculiarly enigmatic quality.
Several of the smaller frames within the paintings are filled with images of volcanoes. At times appearing violent, mythical or simply dormant, the subject matter elicits a certain faith and desire in their mere existence. It is imagery that Thuring has repeatedly returned to, echoing the very foundation and method in the construction of each of her paintings.
