Creative Time has always been committed to privileging artists’ ideas and in 2009—with the support of the Rockefeller Foundation NYC Cultural Innovation Fund— launched the Creative Time Global Residency program, which offered six socially-minded New York-based artists the rare opportunity to get off the ‘hamster wheel’ of exhibitions, biennials, and art fairs, and travel off the beaten path to immerse themselves in a social issue without the demands of producing a project.
Over two years, each artist investigated a burning question central to their practice on topics ranging from mass extinctions due to environmental change (Maya Lin), the burgeoning infrastructure for the visual arts in the Arab world (Walid Raad), the cultural hybridization of Brazil (Sanford Biggers), fringe queer culture in South America (K8 Hardy), immigrant activism in urban Italy (Emily Jacir), and rebuilding housing and communities in post-earthquake Haiti (Swoon).
Join Creative Time in a conversation with the artists and hear their stories, findings, and revelations from their travels around the globe.
Tickets are available for $29 online at www.92y.org or by phone at 212-415-5500.
