This poignant and powerful traveling exhibition is fully illustrated in a book published by powerHouse, October 2009, with foreword by Roy L. Flukinger, the Senior Research Curator of Photography at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center (University of Texas). Accompanying this exhibition is an in-depth interview by Terry Gross with Judith Fox on NPR’s Fresh Air. Three years into their marriage, Judith Fox’s husband, Dr. Edmund Ackell, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Over the course of the next ten years, Fox watched as the man who used to perform surgery, fly planes, and run universities, forgot how to turn on the coffee maker, place a phone call, or remember what his wife had told him two minutes earlier. Fox dedicates this book to other caregivers in an effort to reduce their sense of isolation, and to help de-stigmatize the disease.

Judith Fox is a photographer, writer, and advocate for the more than 35 million people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers worldwide. She started exhibiting her fine art photography in 2002 and has had solo and group shows in Manhattan, Los Angeles and in Virginia. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) and the Harry Ransom Center, as well as private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe.
