PS122 Gallery is pleased to present a two-person show: John Bentham and Paul DiNovo, April 26 to May 18 with an opening reception of April 26, 5 to 7p.
John Bentham is an award-winning photographer, specializing in documentary and portraiture. PS122 gallery will present Bentham’s series, for Proof Magazine, where he turns from his portfolio of academic portraiture to explore a world of grit and glamour. His exhibition is set to reveal a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the New York Drag Queen culture. His images are as colorful and lively as the subjects they hold, capturing the grace and gaucheness of characters outside the norm.
Paul DiNovo combines19th century nautical engravings with modern methods and materials. His latest work, Tsushima, was designed and created specifically for the PS122 gallery. In his latest work, traditional paint has been abandoned in favor of rust, wood stains and transferred copy machine toner. The image is then defiled further with graphic words, diminishing the grandeur of these relics. The weathered and rusting surfaces, on which they are painted, speak of the transitory nature of both subject and artwork. Although his inspiration comes from illustration plates of the late 1800’s and is presented as a large-scale seascape, Tsushima has very little to do with traditional maritime painting. DiNovo’s paintings serve as a sort of nostalgic icon, representing the zenith of technology and national pride that is quickly found obsolete or forgotten.
