Re-Orientations is comprised of over 40 objects on loan from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the majority of which are on view for the first time. It examines a variety of stylistic modifications that occurred in Islamic art of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries due to the flood of cheaply produced goods from Europe into Middle Eastern markets. Labeled as “Western influenced,” collectors have largely ignored the Islamic arts from this period. The exhibition at the Hunter Gallery will be among the first to investigate the artistic trends of that time in the Muslim world.

Re-Orientations will be curated by Ülkü Ü. Bates, Professor of Islamic Art, with the assistance of graduate students in Art History from Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center.
