Melanie Flood Projects is pleased to present “Untitled Gentlemen”, the newest and first solo exhibition of works from Erica Allen. The digital prints presented are fictional portraits of anonymous faces and figures taken from found photographs. The exhibition will open for viewings beginning November 8th, 2009, and a reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday November 11th.
“Untitled Gentlemen” features portraits found in barbershop hairstyle posters and discarded studio photographs. Inspired by the relationship between the real and the artificial in the construction of an identity, Allen manipulates these images to assign new identities to the featured gentlemen. The barbershop portraits, when placed within the frames of studio portraits adopt a candid individuality not present in their more functional role as posters.
“Untitled Gentlemen” will feature a series of photographs identified by the hairstyle number originally found on the barbershop posters. The shifting frame of photographic construction encourages viewers to reflect upon the interpretation, construction, and projection of identity.
