LMAKprojects is pleased to announce LMAKseries, a new five-weekly screening and performance event premiering in the gallery’s L.E.S space on Monday September 7th. LMAKseries is the latest development in the gallery’s continued commitment to time-based works and performance practices. Events will include installation-performances, music and sound art compositions, film and video screenings, and hybrid events that challenge traditional modes of exhibition.
This new series furthers LMAKproject’s aim to integrate film, video, sound art, and media performance into the gallery’s mission and its vision of the contemporary landscape. One particular interest of the series is in exploring the ongoing inter-relationships between digital media, film, and music, whose practices may incorporate improvisation, computer processing, live interaction, narrative, sculptural and spatial aspects in ways that open our conception of both art practice and reception
Each individual event, however, will be focused on the specificity and singularity of each artist’s work, and on creating an engagement with the work that reaches beyond the broad thematic treatments of group exhibitions and festivals. For this first event we invited Audrey Chen, Maria Chavez, and Aki Onda.
Audrey Chan is a musician and performance artist. Using the cello, voice and analog electronics, Chen’s work focuses on the combination and layering of traditional and extended techniques. A large component of her music is improvised and her approach to this is often extremely personal and visceral. Her performance work incorporates sound, movement and visual/sculptural concepts
Avant-turntablist Maria Chavez currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. With a collection of new and broken needles that she calls “pencils of sound” and a selection of records, she harnesses the electro-acoustic sounds of vinyl and needle.
Aki Onda is a self-taught electronic musician, composer, producer, photographer, and multi-media artist. Onda currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
LMAKseries is curated by Louky Keijsers, Richard Garet and in consultation with Berlin based artist Andy Graydon.
