16777216 is a web-based piece by San Francisco artist, Richard S. Mitchell that consists of over 16.7 million frames, each set to one of the colors comprising the RGB color model, displayed at 25 frames per second. The color display is created by the web browser (or other web client) synchronized with the server. The result is a real-time performance that does not vary when viewed on different computers or in different time zones. The color sequence begins with black and moves towards and ends with white. The color changes most quickly through the red channel, more slowly in the green channel, and most slowly in the blue channel. This mapping of number to color channel is an artifact of binary counting and circuit design. Each frame color value is represented by 24 bits divided into 3 bytes of 8 bits each. Byte values range from 0 to 255.
