Lumenhouse will present the group exhibition Euphoric Recall from April 26 – May 17, 2009. The exhibition will include new paintings by Ariel Dill and recent works on paper by Daniel Ingroff and Lillian Kingery. Euphoric Recall is curated by Jessica Duffett. A reception for the artists will be held Saturday May 2nd, 6 – 9 pm.
All of the artists in Euphoric Recall have spent significant parts of their lives on the West Coast. The exhibition takes its title from a drawing by Lillian Kingery named after the psychological phenomena of romanticizing the past. Each of the artists incorporates the history of American abstract painting into his or her myriad influences with a particularly vibrant aesthetic.
Lillian Kingery lives and works in Portland, Oregon and will be showing five works on paper. Her delicate ink drawings are process-based works that intuitively map constellations of perception and memory.
Born in Santa Monica, California, Ariel Dill lives and works in Brooklyn. She will be showing eight paintings. Dill’s paintings bring together diverse influences from ancient ceramics to Native American textiles and European modernist painting. Dill transforms her paintings’ surfaces through layering and removing rich layers of abstract imagery.
Daniel Ingroff lives and works in Los Angeles and will be showing four works on paper. His drawings are fantastic spaces that playfully reference American abstract painting and design. Ingroff contrasts hard edge geometric patterns that nod to Frank Stella and vintage textile design with gooey drips reminiscent of action painting.
