Zg Gallery is pleased to present Molly Briggs’ third exhibition, “Clearing: New Paintings and Works on Paper”. Briggs uses landscape as a means to consider the nature of reality and the ways that desire and expectation shape our perception of the world. She regards the landscape itself, as an analogy to painting and to awareness; “The landscape is a locus of human consciousness, a thing we make by looking – a picture, as it were.”
Since moving to central Illinois in 2007, Briggs’ work has dealt with disorder in the landscape. The “Clearing” series documents fallen branches, trees, uprooted shrubs and waste from sites where the land is being cleared for development or as a result of storm damage. Through the process of translation into paint, piles of debris acquire the characteristics of a terrain’s surface, depth and atmosphere. By looking into the pile of waste, one may see a painted garden, valley or a back yard – another landscape. Briggs’ work deals with longing. She is interested in situations where one knows a subject to be only an illusion, and yet, is persuaded by it.
Molly Briggs received her M.F.A. from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL and her B.F.A. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. “Clearing: New Paintings & Works on Paper” opens Friday, April 17th and runs through May 23, 2009.
