Axelle Fine Arts Galerie is pleased to announce a group summer exhibition featuring Goxwa, Patrick Pietropoli, Michel Delacroix, and Philippe Jacquet.
The intriguing figures Goxwa creates are ambiguous to whether they are appearing or disappearing in the work. “Walls”, according to the Malta-native, “are like masks, simultaneously concealing and revealing the living beings behind them.” Working with oil, beeswax and pigments, a fast-drying medium known as encaustic, Goxwa visualizes her painting before executing it at a concise pace to achieve her mysterious figures. What seems to be representational art connects the energy surrounding the subject matter, in such a way that the viewer is left questioning realities versus sensations.
The urban landscapes of Patrick Pietropoli are extremely detailed, large-scale works that characterize the city as an entity. Utilizing color to convey tone, meaning and mood, Pietropoli’s devotion to detail and lighting make his seemingly-still images come alive. With a restricted palette, he brings an intimate texture and space to his paintings. “There is nothing like interpreting a photograph. It’s not only about depicting a place; it is also about conveying its emotions. As I paint, numerous intricate details suddenly appear which together give life to the artwork. That’s when the soul of a painting is born.”
Michel Delacroix is a self-styled “painter of dreams and of the poetic past”. Delacroix has devoted five decades to painting a city he calls “the Paris of then,” the magical place where he was born, where he spent his boyhood, and where he continues to live to this date. A Paris of by-gone years and innocent splendors is the Paris Delacroix has returned to over and over again in his gentle works. These works, renowned for their graceful balance of “the earthy and the urban, the cosmic and the ordinary,” have captivated private collectors and museums, earning the artist universal acclaim and numerous awards.
The work of Philippe Charles Jacquet opens the windows onto a collective subconscious that makes the link between what is felt and what is imaginary, fleeting moments and ideal landscapes. His compositions are inspired by Brittany coasts and estuaries and have an element that registers deeply with the subconscious. He creates heavily symmetrical, geometric landscapes that are successfully offset with rich colors and an intriguing variety of surfaces. Jacquet builds, rather than paints these structures and they effectively serve as reminders of a human presence in these expansive, dream-like landscapes.
