The second exhibition, Reconstruction, is schedule for fall of 2009.
The present economic and planetary crisis, has presented unprecedented challenges. It has also created new opportunities regarding how we can respond to these and other challenges and re-imagine new beginnings for our contemporary society. In many ways, we are entering uncharted territories. This is the context in which artist are encouraged to approach this exhibition. Uncharted Territory encourages visual artists to imagine both physical and psychological space as territories for exploration and interpretation while working within their core vision as image-makers.
Ten contemporary artists will use abandoned spaces, all located in the Central Valley Arts District, such as, Ironworks Studio at 406 Tompkins Street, , Oualie Art at 540A Freeman Street. These spaces will be a source of inspiration for temporary and ephemeral installations.
An exciting and eclectic event, Uncharted Territory lays the groundwork for an artist collective based in the Central Valley Arts District. It will define and promote the role of art in nurturing a community of artists and provide opportunities of exchange in the arts district and beyond.
Under the auspices of Uncharted Territory Exhibition Oualie Art is also pleased to present two workshops: paper cutting and popup books making with Béatrice Coron; an acclaimed book artist, paper cutter, sculptor, teacher and conceptual artist. On May 16th, 2009 from 10-12am and from 2-4pm, the participants/student will have the privilege of working with Béatrice as she demonstrates her process through examples of her remarkable work.
