The Gallery at HAI presents two self-taught women artists from the HAI Saturday Art Studio. Angela Rogers and Nelia Gibbs have created their own vivid worlds, populated by mysterious inhabitants. Rogers’ paintings depict a sweet, but edgy universe of carnival dwellers and semi-secret societies in jewel tones. Gibbs is using Picasso’s blue period palette, peering into rooms in which androgynous figures stand near doors or windows, which may be closed, or may be opened to reveal the sea, or sky. Curiously, both artists paint figures wearing conical hats, which might indicate the presence of a dunce, a clown or a wizard.
