The Museum celebrates Pride Week 2010 with the opening night of Maysles Cinema’s second annual Homo Harlem film series featuring a screening of The Polymath, or, The Life and Opinions of Samuel R. Delany, Gentleman directed by Fred Barney Taylor. Raised in Harlem, Samuel R. Delany is an award winning science fiction writer whose numerous credits also include penning several episodes of the Wonder Woman comic book. Using a range of experimental techniques and borrowed footage from Delany’s home movies, Taylor captures his subject’s thoughts on racism, violence and his struggles with sexual identity. Following the screening, Homo Harlem Film Festival curator Michael Henry Adams will conduct a discussion with Samuel R. Delany and Fred Barney Taylor. This week-long event investigates the cinematic representation of gay life and culture in black America’s fabled homeland.
