Reconfiguring the Body in American Art, 1820–2009 examines the critical role the figure has played in art of the United States over the past two hundred years. Installed chronologically and thematically, the exhibition will illustrate how the body has been central to the artist from formal portraiture, genre painting, and modernist devices of deconstructing the figure. A substantial section of contemporary work will show how the figure continues to be relevant for artists today.
