Jerome Lagarrigue was born in Paris in 1973. He majored in illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he received the Joseph Lefevre Award for excellence in painting. In 1998, he became a professor of drawing at Parsons School of Design, where he has taught for the last ten years. In 1998, Jerome Lagarrigue also began illustrating children’s books, most notably Maya Angelou’s Poetry for Young People, published by Sterling Press.
In 2005, Jerome Lagarrigue was selected by the French Academy in Rome to receive a one-year residency at Villa Medici in Italy to support the development of a series of large-scale portraits. His residency concluded with a sold-out solo exhibit within the Villa Medici’s main gallery, which received substantial attention from the French and Italian press. Jerome Lagarrigue’s touch is urban. Inspired by street life, music and athletics, his new exhibition “Portraits,” created in honor of the “I Kiffe NY,” French Urban Cultures Festival, will represent the culmination of his work in Italy.
