Alchemy, esoteric entities and the cosmos act as points of departure in Schwörer’s geometric compositions, offering sites for contemplation and metaphysical interpretation. Echoing and reflecting the philosophies of mathematics and the principles of spatial relationships, Schwörer manifests a unique opticality through the energy and interplay of negative and positive space. Riffing on formalist concerns, these works offer dualities between symmetry and asymmetry, chaos and order, rhythm and discord.

Rendered through the material process of deletion, with the use of batik and/or bleaching on black canvas, velvet and cloth, Schwörer’s chemically altered canvases reveal constructs that are expressive and raw. By stimulating unpredictability and controlled disorder, her deconstructivist process mirrors expressionism yet distorts and dislocates its integral elements.
