Axelle Fine Arts Galerie is pleased to announce the opening reception of a solo exhibition featuring new works by Laurent Dauptain.
Most recognized for self-portraits, Dauptain presents his latest works of self-portraiture and landscapes. He constantly evolves his techniques by experimenting with brush stroke, texture, palette and attention to details. At times these compositions appear abstract, but upon closer examination, a face emerges. An explosion of brush strokes combine to create the facial features and define the quality of the contours. “This substantial quantity of [portrait work] sparks my curiosity instead of satisfying it and I have never ceased searching for what the next version will resemble. … It is a pretext for continuously searching for new solutions….[and] is at the heart of my work.”
Taking great liberty with brush strokes, his landscapes and cityscapes are infused with a sense of movement echoing impressionism. His experience of life, his passion for his art, and the refinement of his techniques as well as pictorial mastery all combine offering incredibly complex works. “I devote myself to views of the coast and countryside as much as to more typical representations of towns, factories, roads, automobiles – scenes that constitute our daily environment, but still appear to me as a “field” to be discovered for the painters of today.”
Laurent Dauptain was born on March 25, 1961. A graduate of the Paris School of Fine Arts (1981) and the School of Decorative Arts (1983), he earned a master’s degree in Aesthetics in 1984. Since 1981, he has exhibited constantly and received numerous awards for his work, including the Grand Prix of the Salon des Peintres de l’Armée (2003), the Taylor prize (2001), and the gold medal of the Salon des Artistes Français (1997).
The show will be exhibited from May 6th through 29th, 2010 at Axelle Fine Arts Galerie, 535 West 25th Street, NY, NY. The reception is on May 6th from 6pm to 9pm by RSVP only.
