Below is a description of the programs the Jack Brewer Foundation (JBF) has implemented and is actively involved in developing:
1. JBF Mentorship Program – Young Leaders Initiative
JBF has just finished its Spring 2008 Young Leaders Initiative (YLI) mentorship program at Graphics High School in New York City. The mentorship program targets US Juniors and Seniors from low graduation-rate High Schools and assists in preparing them to enter into a diverse work force and/or University community. The students had the opportunity to obtain career development instruction from executives of Merrill Lynch, EDS, Pfizer, Fortress, Morgan Stanley and Paramount BioCapital. It was very inspirational to witness such a diverse group progress and develop attention to detail in areas like timeliness, speech etiquette, note taking and career development.
Please give a General Donation for supplies, awards and miscellaneous expenses to help with the YLI mentorship program.
2. JBF Scholarship Fund
After returning from the JBF trip to Malawi, it was evident that our work from the United Sates has not gone unnoticed. The 30 JBF scholarship children, many of whom are orphans who live in mud hut villages, now attend secondary school and are learning 3 languages! Our effort, while appreciated, is only a fraction of the work that needs to be done. Malawi has over 1.2 million orphans as a result of the AIDS epidemic. This has caused many orphans to rely on their siblings to take over parental responsibilities. Because Malawi doesn’t offer free secondary school, the majority of these child-headed households don’t get an opportunity to attend school beyond 6th grade, causing a huge educational gap that is crippling an already struggling economy. These challenges are multiplied on the collegiate level where only 1,000 students enroll into the University of Malawi each year even though the population is close to 15 million. JBF believes that by granting top students access to education in relevant degree programs, economic development can begin to grow in the region. This is a concept that the Foreign Minister Joyce Banda has implemented on the ground in Malawi for over two decades. Now over 6,000 children depend on her 7 orphanages, 2 secondary and primary schools, sports and youth development programs. The Joyce Banda Foundation (JBF) and The Jack Brewer Foundation (JBF) have combined our resources in an effort to create a bridge between Malawi and the United States. JBF has adopted a new slogan that will apply to all of our work in the United States and around the world which is “Empowering from Within”.
Please help us in our efforts of providing Secondary School and University Scholarships in Malawi.
3. JBF Youth Sports Initiative
JBF holds sports as an ideal way to promote teamwork, discipline, goal setting and a strong
work ethic into youth around the world. Jack Brewer and many of the supporters of JBF have relied on the many values instilled in them through sports throughout their adult lives. JBF has taken part in 15 camps and clinics throughout the US and Mexico and we are looking forward to continuing our efforts.
JBF is also proud to announce our Youth Sports Equipment Drive which will focus on partnering with sports programs around the US to collect used sports equipment and send them to underdeveloped countries in an effort to spread the values that sports offer youth. JBF was proud to find out that 2 of our sponsorship students were named to the Malawi National Hand Ball Team.
Please help us in our efforts by referring programs and donating to help cover shipping costs.
4. JBF Microfinance Program
JBF is in the process of collaborating with Malawi’s Foreign Minister Joyce Banda to expand microfinance efforts in her home country of Malawi. Mrs. Banda developed a successful microfinance strategy in collaboration with Nobel Peace Price winner Muhammad Yunus, whose Grameen microcredit model has become a model of success. The Malawi microfinance program has seen an astounding 100 percent repayment history since its inception. The majority of the individual loans are for less than $10 US which can provide an individual with enough resources for an entire season. The program includes a goat drive that gives mothers with HIV clean goat milk to feed their children, credit to fund fertilizer, seed and farm equipment and also acts as a means to finance the development of markets to disburse the produce.
Please help JBF as we expand the microfinance program in Malawi and develop similar funds in other regions.
