AVA is pleased to present Trace, an installation for light and sound by Nicedisc. Comprised of a single high wattage lightbulb and multi-channel sound, Trace pairs pulsing light with the binaural beating produced by pairs of slightly detuned oscillators. Custom designed software produces shifting patterns that investigate the psychological and perceptual presence of light, sound, and space.
Embodying contradictory impulses, gesturing at once towards minimalism and aesthetic overload, Trace evokes the stroboscopic excess of the dance club as well as the subtle perceptual investigations of Robert Irwin and James Turrell. Extending Nicedisc’s initial work in film and computer-based video beyond the screen and into an examination of the total viewing environment, Trace recalls the shadow histories of expanded cinema while working to establish new modes of viewing experience.

Nicedisc is the Brooklyn based duo of Jeff Pash and Nick Phillips. Formed in 1999, Nicedisc’s initial experiments in film, sound, and computer-based video sought to trace the possibilities inherent in the materiality of the medium itself. Their practice incorporates live performances, screenings, and gallery installations. They have performed and exhibited at diverse venues across the U.S. and Europe, including Issue Project Room, Tonic, Scaramouche, Flux Factory, Glasgow’s Nice N’ Sleazy, and the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art in Ithaca, NY.
