New York, NY-3rd Ward is pleased to present Moving On South, 3rd Ward Gallery Director Dana Orland’s upcoming project at White Box. Moving On South is the last exhibition to take place in WBX’s West 26th St. location, featuring the works of Memphis native and Brooklyn artist Virginia Overton. The installation, curated by Orland, ushers the art space on to its south of Houston destination with lights, mirrors and revving engines.

Overton overtakes the soon to be vacated space with Untitled (Skytracker). This ultra-bright searchlight run amuck, illuminates every nook and cranny of the space, seemingly searching for a way out. The perimeter of the space is marked with a construction-style chalk line, turning the gallery into a blue print. Outside, Overton positions her pick-up truck over a mirror, rigged with under carriage lights. The mirror acts as a reflector and illuminates the crude mechanism of the truck?s under belly. VideoBox will screen Sunrise, Overton’s 12-minute video documentation of a drive across Interstate 40, observing the change from darkness to light until the sun ?blows out? the shot? an antithetical ode to the heroic ?drive into the sunset.?

Virginia Overton was born in 1971 in Nashville, Tennessee. In the past several years, she has been living and working between Memphis and NYC. She received an M.F.A. from the University of Memphis in 2005. In the summer of 2006, Overton curated and exhibited work in VA4398UV, a mobile group exhibition. Recently she participated in the ?String Arty Show? at Greene Naftali Gallery in New York and had a solo show at Powerhouse in Memphis.

Dana Orland is the newly appointed Gallery Director at Luxe gallery, the Gallery Director at 3rd Ward and a curator of young contemporary art. Orland relocated from Israel to New York in the late 90’s. She is deeply involved with the New York art world and remains attuned to the Israeli art trends as well. She collaborates with numerous curators, galleries and organizations such as the Brooklyn Arts Council and the Sculptors’ Guild.
