Raw: a term which can be used to describe Elizabeth Eiten’s work, for it describes not only the content and emotion felt, but the actual process used to produce the photographs. Eiten does not rely on Photoshop or other computer based programming to create her photographs, instead she hand places all objects and figures into their desired positions. Eiten often enlists a friend to click the shutter for her during shoots for which she is posing. The images are scanned onto a computer for digital printing, leaving the original image virtually untouched by technology.

The use of dead animals and viscera in the images is not to promote death; rather this subject matter is used to celebrate life. Eiten reflects on her childhood in rural upper Michigan, and feels closeness to the animals and fish in her photographs. The Limbic System referenced in the title is the biological system in the brain that controls emotions; coincidently this system is lacking in fish. Eiten comments on her own emotions and childhood through incorporating herself and the fish into one symbiotic image. Through the seemingly dark and gruesome imagery a light is shown into the life of the artist, one that reflects a beautiful imagination.
