The film that laid the groundwork for the submarine movie sub-genre is a gripping, superbly executed World War II flag-waver based on true events. Grant, lending his trademark sophistication to an action hero role, stars as Captain Cassidy of the USS Copperfin on a treacherous mission to infiltrate Tokyo Bay, while the uniformly excellent supporting cast includes John Garfield as a skirt-chasing torpedoman and Dane Clark in his first major role.
