Long considered an isolated Shangri-la untouched by outside forces, modern scholarship has revealed Tibet to be a culture built on both indigenous traditions and foreign influences. Cross-cultural interactions can be traced artistically, particularly in the Chinese genre of Arhat painting. Earthly Immortals: Arhats in Tibetan Painting highlights the creativity with which Tibetan artists adopted this genre and transformed it into an artistic class all its own.
