Christopher Henry Gallery is pleased to present An Ordinary Childhood by Mitchell Marco. This exhibit furthers his search into American life and its structure. Drawing on his own experience of growing up in a suburb of ‘Dystopia’ (Atlantic City) Marco presents us with black and white drawings which depict a nuclear family and the complex interactions that can occur within this unit.
The images reflect upon a time in which the family structure was simpler, evoking a bygone era of black-and-white media. However the past is never simple and Marco shows us that the eternal conundrums of human psychology are always present just beneath the surface. The facial expression and body language charge the scenes with visually conveyed emotion. Marco’s unorthodox composition and proportion inform the viewer that there is something amiss. An unnatural light effect suggests an otherworldly significance. Everyday life is elevated and transformed into a distinctly American mythology; cinematic, dramatic and mysterious.
Mitchell Marco’s work has been featured at Exit Art, LMCC, ABC No Rio, Jonathan Shorr Gallery, George Adams Gallery, Parrish Art Museum, and Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2003 Marco received the Alexander Rutsch Award for Works on Paper.
