EVENING SALE May 9th:
The Contemporary Art Evening Auction to be held on May 9th will showcase exceptionally rare and important works spanning the past six decades. The sale includes a remarkably strong survey of Pop Art: the cover lot is Roy Lichtenstein’s “Sleeping Girl” from 1964, a paradigm of his renowned Girls series that epitomizes his Benday-dot technique and comic-book inspired aesthetic; while Andy Warhol’s legendary “Double Elvis [Ferus Type]” of 1963 and iconic Ten-Foot Flowers of 1967-68 without question define the very highest tier of his revolutionary oeuvre. Francis Bacon’s “Figure Writing Reflected in Mirror” of 1976 is one of the artist’s most important paintings ever to come to auction, and is a summation of his simultaneously painterly and intellectual genius; while Cy Twombly’s masterful “Untitled” (New York City) from 1970 is a triumph of his prodigious career and the sublime embodiment of his most highly sought-after ‘blackboard’ paintings. The magnificent “Abstraktes Bild” [768-2] by Gerhard Richter, perhaps the most revered artist working today, is a devastatingly sumptuous essay of his inimitable language of abstraction, and is perfectly complimented by his ‘photo-painting’ “Wolken (Clouds)” painted more than twenty years earlier in 1970. Alongside many other highlights, including major Abstract Expressionist paintings by Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, Arshile Gorky and Richard Diebenkorn, are exciting Contemporary works from more recent years, including the stunning “Ring of 1981” by Jean-Michel Basquiat; “Untitled” (W38) of 1996 by Christopher Wool; and Charles Ray’s sensational sculpture “Aluminum Girl” of 2003.
