Each painting weaves a complexity of allegorical meanings, a myriad of spiritual symbols and a constant flow of personal recollections. Her obsessive use of detail saturates the entire surface and is constant and deliberate throughout this series of work. She describes her thought process when beginning a work as a free expression of figurative drawing. Often the work undertakes its own journey without a formulated idea at first, eventually resulting in a metaphysical composition.
In this series of recent paintings, the artist’s primary concern is storytelling, and more precisely, a passage of time. In her considerations of the cycles of both nature and human history, each image epitomizes the moment in time, yet not a static one: it moves, it fascinates, it begs questions. As a poet would, she invites the viewer into her imaginary world by creating strong complexity of pictorial space, without necessarily imposing her interpretation. One is simply asked to take a journey.
It is this delicate balance between appropriating a Japanese tradition of controlled application of line and color, and a more expressive passionate soul-searching that’s typical of Russian character, that makes her works so unique. Combining this precise exact application technique with surrealist aspects of the composition, she manages to reconfigure each work to her own storytelling motives.
Her new works convey the impression that memories and storytelling can be static when captured in a precise moment in time, yet fleeting and ever-changing as only the human history can allow. In this exquisite narration the artist simply expresses her vision and the results are wonderful to explore.
