Chares Armstrong is The Korea Foundation Professor of Korean Studies in the Social Sciences at Columbia University. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1994 and specializes in modern Korean, East Asian, and international history. His latest book is Tyranny of the Weak: North Korea and the World, 1950 – 1990 (Cornell, forthcoming 2012). He is completing a history of modern East Asia for the Wiley-Blackwell Concise History of the Modern World series.
