In this show, Rattke presents a series of paper-based collages created from the artist’s collection of visual material- long culled from books, old magazines, found photos and record covers. Having worked with collage for most of his teenage years producing DIY fanzines, flyers and graphics in the Berlin punk community, Rattke continues this exploration of collage while developing a more complex visual vocabulary and honing his exploration.
Borrowing from the visual codes of the 1960’s and 1970’s, the collages in “Nouveau Système” present Rattke’s intricate, ornamental, excessive view into an imagined past, rife with beauty and sexual freedom. “My collages are trapped in endless halls of mirrors, caught in loops, stuck in repetitive patterns. I try to create a world that folds in on itself, a reflection of a narcissistic ‘me-generation’…”
