The Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition celebrating 25 years as a public gallery in New York City. The gallery was launched together with founding partner Nancy Lieberman in May 1986 and continued as Lieberman & Saul until the gallery moved to 560 Broadway in 1993.
The exhibition will feature the work of one artist selected from the exhibition program for each year, beginning in 1984 and concluding with 2010. Many of these artists have worked with the gallery for many years- for example Andrew Bush, Sally Gall, Bill Jacobson, Sarah Anne Johnson. In almost all cases the work has either been borrowed back from collectors or is represented as an editioned photograph. Many of the lenders are long time supporters of the gallery.
The force behind the exhibition and accompanying catalog is Saul’s friend and colleague, art historian Bonnie Yochelson, who has collaborated on the selection of works and written a biographical essay about Saul for the catalog. The publication will also include an illustrated chronology of the twenty-five year exhibition program and illustrations of the works in the exhibition.
In addition to the many solo shows which will be highlighted in the exhibition (a full list is available on our website include a link here to the list ) the chronology will feature illustrations from a number of group shows curated by colleagues including “A Visible Order” (1986) Paul Laster and Renee Ricardo, Photomontage in Spain 1930/1980 (1987) curated by Marta Gili, director of the Jeu de Paume, Photography and Sculpture, and “Foreign Ferns: Botanical Studies from Talbot to the Present” (1994) co-curated with Mia Fineman, “Richard Artschwager: Photo/Works 1945-1996” (1996) curated by Ingrid Schaffner, senior curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia.
The show is intended to not only provide a glimpse into the evolving history and program of the gallery over many years, but a celebration of the artists, collectors, critics, curators, dealers and friends who have made it all happen.
