Edwin Bethea follows the formal tradition of representational paintings that convey an honest, unadulterated depiction of life through his eyes. These large-scale works highlight an unfolding story of the artists past, present and future social climate.
The title “Happy Hollow” was inspired by one of America’s oldest playgrounds, established in 1911 in Philadelphia, PA. Happy Hollow represents an origin of shared experience, the idea of the fabled melting pot that has transformed our co-existence and defined out relationships in new ways. Bethea’s perspective exhibits conflict and struggle in a tactful and bold new approach.
BIO
Edwin Bethea was born in Philadephia, PA and became interested in art at a very young age. Scribbles and mothers day cards soon became still lifes, constructions and live model studies. After lots of extra curricular courses, contests, events and exploring materials, Edwin enrolled at the Maryland Institute College of Art with a presidential scholarship. The completion of his BFA sparked a sense of curiosity into what existed outside the confines of his habitat. He traveled throughout the country meeting, interacting and internalizing a Nation composed of millions of microcosms. Bethea took graduate classes at Arizona State University before he landed in Los Angeles and New York as a full time artist. He has also spent much time under the wings of accomplished contemporary artists, Takashi Murakami and Robert Longo. What began as popsicle stick houses and cartoon duplications in Philadelphia has evolved into a life long commitment to the arts. Edwin Bethea dedicates his life to his craft, always striving to master the past, interpret the present and anticipate the future.
