SEE // Make It New // John Baldessari
Sarah Bondoc

Revered conceptual artist John Baldessari is known for appropriating images from movies and popular culture. His latest show at Marian Goodman borrows from art history instead, overlaying artworks from the 18th through the 20th centuries with his signature primary colors and adding text from song titles by the likes of Johnny Mercer and Tom Waits. Baldessari ask viewers to put together pieces of a puzzle, reinvigorating exhausted images by bringing out unexpected aspects. Color, image, and language create contrasts that introduce modern interpretations to historical material.

WHERE TO SEE
John Baldessari’s Double Play opens at Marian Goodman on October 19 with a reception from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The exhibition will be on view through November 21.
