Since the rise of YouTube, the music video has left MTV and joined the general mass of viral marketing videos. One of the genre’s great achievements of the year is “Gangnam Style” by South Korean rapper PSY. “Gangnam Style” stays catchy while hitting the right tone of self-parody, like the K-Pop version of Justin Timberlake’s SNL career. The song is a loop of techno-influenced hooks, and by the end of the video, the over-the-top repetitiousness itself becomes part of the joke. In the post-MTV era, that’s exactly the right note to hit: the pop star as a joke about pop stars, starring in a music video as a joke about music videos.
