What Does a Party Look Like in North Korea?
Amanda Ryan

The New Museum relaunched its website this week, and in addition to handy mobile tie-ins and a digital archive, they have a new monthly digital artwork commission called First Look. With a heavy emphasis on interactive pieces, it will give the public a chance to experience art in new ways and explore the social and aesthetic possibilities of web-based artworks.

The first commission is a collaboration between artist Taryn Simon and Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz. Their Image Atlas is an image search engine that sorts results by country, highlighting similarities and differences. For example, a search for “party” turns up politicians, soccer players, and confetti in North Korea, Brazil, and the United States, respectively. Try it out for yourself and see what connections you can make!
