On July 19, notable Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei lost his appeal in court challenging a $2 million fine for tax evasion. This sentence continues the artist’s ongoing legal saga since his mysterious and unjust detainment by the Chinese government in 2011. Known for his artwork, vocal political criticism, and popular online presence (yes, he has a twitter, also translated into English), his unexplained arrest last year sparked an immediate outcry of international sympathy. Just in time for this latest development, Alison Klayman’s critically acclaimed documentary Ai Weiwei Never Sorry is now open in select theaters. Last year during Ai’s detainment, we discussed the artist’s situation with Klayman and other experts.
