Jay-Z needs your help. Non-profit Word Above the Street has launched a Kickstarter Campaign for the Water Tank Project, in which an impressive roster of artists and celebrities will create designs to cover water towers across New York City. In addition to Jay-Z, Ed Ruscha, Jeff Koons and Devendra Banhart have already signed on to the project in an effort to raise environmental and water sustainability awareness. The Water Tank Project will only be funded if at least $1 million is raised by July 6.
You don’t need to donate to see some public water tank art, though. Tom Fruin’s sculpted water tower, a multicolor, fourteen-foot tall plexiglass and steel structure that sits on top of his studio, is up in DUMBO right now. At night, the tower lights up for an all-night show programmed on a computer chip.
The Water Tank Project will transform the city skyline for twelve weeks in the summer of 2013.
