“Imagine a world where we never again hear the symphonic startup of a Windows 95 machine,” says Brendan Chilcutt, the creator of the Museum of Endangered Sounds. His digital archive of old-school tech hubbub like the ring of a Nokia 3310, television static, an anxious Tamagotchi pet, or the background music to the original version of Tetris. Chilcutt started his online project in January and plans to add many more sounds by 2015. “And when the entire world has adopted devices with sleek, silent touch interfaces, where will we turn for the sound of fingers striking QWERTY keypads?” Chilcutt continues on his site. “Tell me that. And tell me: Who will play my GameBoy when I’m gone?”
