Sculptor Tom Sachs lives and works following a system of rules. He can tell you the correct way to sweep, articulate the perils of colors like olive green and McDonald’s yellow, and riff on how to paint plywood. In this regulated environment, the controls and contingencies produce a well-oiled machine ready to catapult people to Mars. Demonstrating the efficiency of his methodical M.O. is his exhibition Space Program: Mars (held in the Park Avenue Armory until June 17), where Sachs displays a plywood lander, rover, mission control, and everything else needed for an outer space mission—all made entirely from common hardware materials. Luckily, if you can’t make it to the show, all the videos are online on his website and YouTube channel.
