Forget The Dorchester. The best London city views are from high above Southbank Centre, which is precisely where artist Fiona Banner chose to erect Roi des Belges. Designed for a break from the daily grind, the project is a one-bedroom boat available to the public for one-night-only stays. Banner collaborated with David Kohn Architects to create the carefully crafted abode, which was hand-picked by Artangel and Living Architecture from an open competition that saw more than five hundred entries by artists and architects from around the world. Those lucky enough to score a stay will enjoy the double-bedroom suite’s library, viewing deck, kitchenette, and plethora of playful tools provided to log their stay (guides to cloud patterns, tides, seagulls, and train-lines are all on hand). Since it’s opening, guests like Jeremy Deller and husband-and-wife duo Amadou & Mariam have performed on the boat. Public bookings for the vessel have sold out, but don’t fret—you can enter to win a night’s stay through the Ideas for London competition, where a jury awards one genius idea a month with an overnight booking.
