Artist David Shrigley’s new billboard commission for the High Line asks, in Shrigley’s trademark messy scrawl, “How are you feeling?” The billboard gives a brutally honest answer to its own question, beginning with “I’m feeling very unstable and insecure” and going downhill from there.
Shrigley is known for witty and incisive doodles mixing text with off-kilter cartoons, and his writing was adapted into a 2007 album by musicians and bands including David Byrne, Islands, Liars, Grizzly Bear, Mount Eerie, R. Stevie Moore, and Final Fantasy. The British artist is currently promoting his show at the Hayward Gallery with a droll iPhone app consisting of a little animated hand tapping a light switch on and off.
Shrigley’s billboard is the next in a series of High Line Art billboards that previously featured Anne Collier and John Baldessari.
